Guido W. Imbens, David Card, and Joshua D. Angrist Are Awarded the 2021 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics

The three economists have revolutionized empirical work in the social sciences according to the committee. Guido Imbens and Joshua Angrist made innovative methodological contributions to understanding causal relationships. Their framework shows what “precise conclusions” can be drawn from observations, and has been widely adopted by researchers working with observational data. David Card's work on natural experiments has fundamentally changed our understanding of inequality and social and economic forces that impact low-income workers.
