In the first round of global burden of foodborne disease estimates, Sandy co-led a major study estimating the role food and particular foods play as disease transmission routes. This was critical in figuring out what proportion of gastrointestinal illness is foodborne, a necessary foundation for the whole project. The role of specific foods was also estimated, which can enable better targeting of food safety policy. As the only economist in FERG, Sandy will be asked to develop economic research to help make the disease burden estimates more useful to governments in low income countries.
Congratulations Sandy!
