ARE Professor Max Auffhammer has authored an Energy Insitute at Haas blog post on free trade and tariffs as they relate to energy resources. The Trump administration has recently made a statement proposing increased tariffs and restricted trade in commodities. "In my view, limiting coal exports might be the only good outcome for the environment." noted Auffhammer. "Tariffs on foreign cars (which tend to be more fuel efficient), energy resources (lots of hydro up north), foreign steel and iron, will result in worse environmental outcomes domestically and higher prices for consumers."
