Empirical Project

You will be required to complete and present a paper to the class that uses the tools taught in the course to investigate an economic problem which interests you. You will need to formulate a model, derive some testable hypotheses from that model, and test those hypotheses. Remember that time is short, and that working with data is often extremely time consuming.

You must turn in a completed proposal in the eighth week of class, and should make an appointment with me to discuss your proposal shortly thereafter.

Papers will be presented at the end of the term. Each of you will be assigned a date for your presentation earlier in the term. One week prior to your presentation, you must bring to class three copies of your paper: one for me, and one for each of two referees.

Your grade for the project will be based on the quality of your presentation, the two referee reports you write, and your discussion of some fellow student's work.

First year students in ARE will be expected to revise their paper along the lines suggested by their referees and in class discussion. This revised paper is necessary to satisfy the departmental econometrics requirement, and must be turned in to me by May 31st. I will take this deadline seriously, and may not accept late papers. Even if a late paper is accepted, its score will be adversely affected by its lateness.
