  • Secret Monitoring of the Berkeley Network by UCOP
    

    In December of 2015 the committee became aware that devices to monitor all inbound and outbound data had been installed on the Berkeley network at the direction of the Office of the President (UCOP). Further, Berkeley IT staff were required to keep this monitoring secret.

    The tenured faculty on this committee agreed that remaining silent on this issue would make us complicit in what we regarded as a serious violation of the principles of shared governance, and an important threat to academic freedom. We shared information about this monitoring via a variety of channels in late January of 2016.
