There will be several problem sets assigned during the term. Problem sets will usually consist of some economic analysis, some application of statistics, and some computer work.
In general, problem sets should present results and explanations neatly and in an organized fashion. There will be a considerable amount of programming required in order to complete most problem sets. All code and supporting functions which are neither part of the Matlab distribution nor provided by me should be presented with the problem set; either integrated into the text of the rest of the problem set, or as appendices. Late problem sets will not be graded.
There is more to programming than simply getting correct answers; the clarity and efficiency with which results are obtained matter as well. Good programming style is important.
We will be using the Matlab computer package on a unix platform; students in ARE should already have accounts on are.berkeley.edu. Students who have no such account should see the TA to make the appropriate arrangements.
