With support from a machine-learning model, ARE PhD Candidate Trevor Woolley and co-authors review the literature on the economic (dis)incentives of adopting farm animal welfare practices. The team documents and synthesizes research across all fields of science for four different industries: dairy cows, broilers, layer hens, and hogs. Their review of supply-side incentives to adopt animal welfare-improving farm practices, which highlights research gaps on the economic factors related to adoption of welfare-improved practices, was recently published in Food Policy. Addressing these research gaps can help inform evidence-based policies that align practice with public expectations for farm animal welfare while being cognizant of producer constraints and incentives.
