Text
We will use Introductory Econometrics: A Modern Approach, by Jeffrey M. Wooldridge. The most recent edition is the 5th, but earlier editions are acceptable. There will be several copies on reserve at Moffitt Library. Reserve call numbers will be posted here when they are available.
Software
Problem sets will require you to use stata; a data analysis/statistical software program. We will begin using Stata in a tutorial during the second week of class. If you want to purchase your own copy of the software for your laptop or home computer, a single-user six-month license for Small Stata (sufficient for this course) is available through Berkeley's GradPlan for $32. (An annual license is $49.) Note that a license allows you to install the software on up to three of your own computers. See http://www.stata.com/order/schoollist.html to purchase (Select University of California, Berkeley, then look for the product you want). Software is delivered to campus for pick-up after your online purchase. There are often delays in delivering copies of Stata at the beginning of the semester, so if you are sure that you will take this class you should order a copy ASAP to ensure you receive it on time.

-Review sessions: We will host review sessions during the regular scheduled lecture period in our regular room.
-Make-up Quiz 8 on Tues (5/6) to cover diff-in-differences and fixed effects (we discussed differences between these two estimation methods in class last Tuesday). Reminder: I only keep your top five quiz scores; I drop the rest.
-Practice final exams have been distributed via BSpace.
-Office hrs this week: Steve on Mon 3-4 pm and Friday 12:30-2:30 pm in Rm 234/236 Giannini Hall. Andrew on Wed from 9-10 am and 3-4 pm in Rm 321 Barrows Hall. Dilek TBA--you need to email her if you are interested in attending office hrs; she'll schedule some if there is sufficient demand.
- May 1: Summary of recent announcements appearing via BSpace:
- Daily assignment for Thurs (May 1).
-Quiz 7 on Thurs (5/1) to cover starred items under daily assignment.
-Dilek has office hrs Thurs(5/1) from 5-7 pm.
-Exercise 2 of PS 6 can be submitted on Tuesday (5/6) at the class review session (2-3:30pm).
-If you haven't done so review the Notes on Basic Empirical Methods for a concise review of the semester; these are on BSpace under Resources>Readings.
- April 24: New daily assignment #18 posted.
- April 22b: Quiz #6 on Thurs 4/24 will cover the short readings from Wooldridge below.
-Subsection of Ch. 2.5 titled "Variances of the OLS Estimators" through the discussion of heteroskedasticity (~2 pages).
-Ch. 3.5 on the Efficiency of OLS: The Gauss-Markov Theorem (What does BLUE stand for?) (~1 page).
-Ch. 8.1 on the Consequences of Heteroskedasticity for OLS (ignore the bits about 'consistency') (~1 page).
-Re-visit 7.5 on the Linear Probability Model through the discussion of heteroskedasticity. (~2.5 pages)
Comment: It's a good time to begin prep for the final so you should know why we care about having an unbiased estimator of the Betas and the variances of the Betas.
- April 22a: Problem set 6 posted. Due May 2, in Prof. Buck's mailbox in 207 Giannini.
- April 18: New daily assignment #17 posted. Quiz #5 on Tues 4/22 will be based on the daily assignment and short reading. Be sure to read the PS 5 hints before submitting it on Tues--the hints include a correction to Exercise 3 which makes the related questions clearer. The Lecture Notes: Panel data and fixed effects regression and daily assignment 16 solutions should also provide guidance on PS 5.
- April 17: Quiz on Tuesday April 22, topic TBA.
- April 16: PS 5 due date has been moved to Tues 4/22 to provide more time to process fixed effects regression material presented in lecture and section. Notes to accompany the fixed effects material covered in lecture have been posted. Solutions to Daily Assignment #15 and #16 have been posted to BSpace.
- April 10: New daily assignment posted, along with (required) notes on regression discontinuity. Note on quizzes:
We are adding a quiz on 4/22 so there will be a total of 7 quizzes; I will drop the lowest two scores.
Also, if you have to miss a quiz then there will be an optional make-up quiz opportunity RRR week. As a consequence there will be no individual make-up quizzes. If you have to miss a bunch of class then you should probably come talk to us anyways.
- April 8: Check out the daily assignments.
- April 6: Lecture notes with worked solutions for prediction intervals and interaction variables has been posted. A daily assignment has been posted (not collected) recommended for completion by Tues (4/8); solutions to be posted on BSpace. Study 13.3, 13.4 & 14.1 from Wooldridge for Thurs (4/10); a separate reading has been posted on BSpace. Handouts 16-18 have been posted.

Lecture notes on confidence intervals as well as interaction terms are posted; the section on confidence intervals for predictions is short, we'll cover that at the beginning of class Thurs.
- April 1(a): The due date for PS 4 has been moved to 4/8 (next Tues). There will be a quiz Thurs (4/3) at the beginning of class covering 7.1-7.2 from Wooldridge. A schedule for the second half of the semester is posted here.
