Jerome B. Siebert


Jerry Siebert is an economist in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, University of California, Berkeley. Prior to his current assignment, he was Director of Cooperative Extension for the University of California. In addition to his academic experience, he has held positions in both business and government. His government positions involved work at the United States Department of Agriculture as special assistant to four Secretaries of Agriculture. In addition, his farming background includes a family farm in Madera, California.

His work centers on research and education into the impacts on California agriculture from changes in public policies affecting production and marketing of California agricultural commodities. In particular, he analyzes the use of market mechanisms to evaluate the economic effects that changes in public policy might have. He is also a key participant in the University of California-Russia project that is working to establish a land grant model in Russia and help facilitate a market economy.

In addition to his work at the University of California, he serves "ex-officio" on the California State Consolidated Farm Services Committee, as a public member to the California Walnut Commission and Chairman of the Walnut Marketing Board, President of the San Francisco Farmers' Club, and member of the Board of Directors of the International Agribusiness Management Association.
