File 'ineq_pretax.txt' is the inequality indices for family pretax income 1981-1997; 'ineq_posttax.txt' for family post-tax income inequality during the same period. Either file is a 850 by 17 matrix. The data for each state is stacked on top of one another (17 years by 50 states, not including D.C.). The year spans 1981-1997. The order of state is as below (the number is the CPS code for each state). The 17 columns are respectively: Gini, Standard deviation of logarithm, Relative mean deviation, Coefficient of variation, and Atkinon index with epsilon being 0.1 and 0.25 to 3 incremented by 0.25. The March CPS files are used for the calculations. For details about indices construction and sample selection, see Ximing, Wu, Jeffrey M. Perloff, and Amos Golan, "Effects of Government Policies on Income Distribution and Welfare," working paper February 2002.
