Visiting Graduate Students

Visiting Graduate Students

The department does host visiting graduate students each year. Students must have completed the first year of an economics Ph. D. program prior to their visit to Berkeley. That program must be broadly comparable to our students first year training. It must include a micro-economic theory course given at the level of Mas-Collel, Whinston and Green, Microeconomics. Visiting students will be expected to be enrolled in or auditing departmental courses. We particularly welcome visitors interested in taking the field courses in resources and environment, development, or policy.

The department accepts visitors from institutions that have formal exchange programs with Berkeley. Those students should apply through those exchange programs. See Graduate Exchange Programs for instructions on how to apply.

Visa and other processing issues make it very difficult for ARE to invite students whose institutions do not participate in exchange programs with Berkeley. We will consider such applications for visitor status only under exceptional circumstances. Visiting students applying for visitor status directly to the department should write to our program assistant, Diana Lazo (lazo@berkeley.edu). In your application letter: 1. Tell us which Ph. D. level courses you have taken in econometrics and economic theory and how they relate to the courses required at Berkeley. 2. Which faculty member you would like as your official sponsor. You may suggest at most two. 3. What courses you will follow while at Berkeley. Be aware that formal credit can only be earned through University Extension and that there is a fee. 4. Which terms you want to attend. 5. The source of your funding. 6. The names and addresses of two references.

Visiting students who apply to Berkeley directly through University Extension will be considered by the department only if they submit the above information either as part of their application or directly to the department.

Please do not write to multiple members of our faculty in search of a sponsor. We will deny applicants who do so.

Visitors are responsible for paying all of their own fees.
