Mission

The Giannini Foundation of Agricultural Economics Library at the University of California, Berkeley provides pathways to high quality information in Agricultural, Resource and Environmental Economics to support the research activities of Giannini Foundation members, their students and other researchers in the California agricultural community.1

Collections

Established in 1930, the Giannini Foundation Library is the oldest university Agricultural Economics Library in the United States and has an extensive and rare collection of materials in Agricultural and Environmental Economics. The Library’s growing collection consists of nearly 200,000 items in a variety of formats: digital working papers, pamphlets (primary source material), books, journals, microfilm/fiche, maps and atlases.

The Library staff have created a local online catalog/database, Orpha, which allows you to discover thousands digital publications in agricultural and environmental economics by subject as well as the Library's print collection back to 1987. There is a card catalog in the Library that lists earlier materials. The Library staff also create and maintain a digital archive of working papers from the Department of Agricultural & Resource Economics at the University of California, Berkeley.

Hours/Location

The Giannini Foundation Library is located in 248 Giannini Hall, on the UC Berkeley campus (map). Our regular hours are Tuesday-Friday 8-12pm, 1-5pm. As we have a very small staff, we suggest that non-ARE users make an appointment to insure the best service. Please call ahead (510) 642-7121 before coming.

Access Policy

The Giannini Foundation Library is open to all researchers in Agricultural and Environmental Economics. The collection is non-circulating and must be used on the premises. A copy machine/scanner and microform printer/scanner are available in the library. The Giannini Foundation Library does not participate in interlibrary loan, but we will fulfill limited requests for materials for a fee.
