To set up a computer running Windows Vista to print to the ARE printer in Giannini Room 237, the LPR print service must be installed.
From the start menu, open the Control Panel. If using Classic View, choose Programs and Features and then select “Turn Windows Features on or off” found in the left-hand sidebar. If using “Control Panel Home”, the default Vista view, choose “Programs” and then find “Turn Windows Features on or off” under the heading “Programs and Features”.
The Windows Features dialog will open, under the heading “Print Services” put a checkmark in “LPR Port Monitor” and choose OK. The feature will be installed.
Then to install the printer, open the Control Panel again, choose “Printers” in the Classic View or choose “Hardware and Sound” and then “Printer” in the Vista Control Panel Home view. Then choose “Add a printer” and in the resulting window choose “Add a local printer” and continue. Then choose “Create a New Port” and specify “LPR Port” for the type of port. Choose “next” and fill in the “Name or address of server providing lpd:” with the numeric address 128.32.175.17 and the “Name of printer or queue on that server:” with arehp_2. After continuing, specify the printer driver to be “HP LaserJet 8150 PS” and click “next”. Provide a printer name that you want to be used to identify this printer on your computer (use any name that makes sense to you, it is only used for identification on your computer). Choose “next” and the printer will be installed. When the success message is displayed, choose “print a test page” to make sure it works.

To set up your own computer to print to the ARE printer in Giannini Hall 237, the LPR print service must be added to a Windows XP system.
From the Start menu, choose “Control Panel” and then choose “Add or Remove Programs”. On the sidebar to the left choose “Add/Remove Windows Components”. From the resulting list, select “Other Network File and Print Services” and “Print Services for Unix” by putting a checkmark in their checkboxes. Choose “Continue” or “Finish” as necessary until the installation is complete.
After the LPR service is installed, the printer can be added. From the Control Panel again, choose “Printer and Faxes”. From the sidebar on the left choose “Add a printer” to start the Add Printer Wizard. On the first screen of the wizard, select “Local printer attached to this computer” (yes it is counter-intuitive, but do not select “network printer”), if necessary de-select “Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer”. Continue to the next screen and choose “Create a New Port” and select “LPR port” for the type of port from the list. (If you do not see “LPR port” as a choice, the first step in the paragraph above did not complete successfully.) The next step will display a dialog box named “Add LPR compatible printer”. In the space labelled “Name or address of server providing lpd” put the number: 128.32.175.17 and in the space “Name of printer or print queue on that server put : arehp_2 and continue. The installation of the printer software will begin, the model of the black and white printer in Giannini 237 is HP LaserJet 8150dn, the name you give the printer here is your choice, it will be the name that shows up in the print dialog on your computer. When you finish the setup, be sure to leave it set to “Do not share this printer”.

When sending mail using Squirrelmail, the error below (showing your username instead of “dana”) means that the username to which the message is addressed is incorrect. Check to make sure that the addressee of your message is a valid ARE address.

You may be using your ”internal” instead of your “external” password. To login to linux or windows you should use the “internal” password, to check email you should use the “external” password. If the password you are trying does not work, please contact Will or Dana in person or by telephone (we do not want to handle passwords in email messages) to verify or reset your passwords.

ARE now has a web-based email setup so that department members can read and send ARE email without having to install and use Eudora. Open a web browser such as Firefox, Safari, Opera, Internet Explorer, Camino, etc. and connect to are.berkeley.edu/mail/. Enter your user name (the part of your email address before the “@ sign”) and use your “external” password if you have been assigned two ARE passwords, otherwise use your current ARE password (see “My ARE password doesn’t work for email”).

This message is legitimate, and is created in your incoming mail box by SquirrelMail (also see “Reading your ARE email through a web page with SquirrelMail”). It can sometimes show up in your ARE mailbox when you view your mail using Eudora or some email client other than SquirrelMail. Despite the predictions of dire consequences, if it gets deleted, it’s not a big problem. It will be re-created, if necessary, the next time you use SquirrelMail; if you can avoid deleting it, SquirrelMail will possibly work a little better or faster the next time you use it.
