Master of Science in ARE

Registered Berkeley graduate students may add an M.S. in ARE with the consent of the Graduate Advisory Committee.

A total of 24 units of work in ARE is required. The courses shall include ARE 201 and ARE 202. Master's candidates are expected to take a comprehensive examination, which is offered only in June every year. The exam will be the same as the Ph. D. preliminary exam, but will be graded at the masters level.

Students wishing to write an M.S. thesis instead of taking the comprehensive exam may only do so with the explicit permission of the Graduate Advisory Committee. This option will only be open to candidates with superior grades in their economics coursework.

Only currently enrolled Berkeley graduate students may obtain an M.S. degree. No applications for this degree are accepted under any circumstances from those not currently enrolled as Berkeley graduate students.
