This web page contains information
pertaining to the empirical projects of second year
ARE students.
All students are expected to do their empirical
projects during their second year in the program. A
waiver for one year may be granted by the GAC under
special circumstances. Written petitions for such a
waiver must provide a justification for the delay and
receive the endorsement of the student's mentor.
Administratively, all the students should register for
this course in both the fall (219A) and spring (219B)
semesters. You will receive a letter grade for each
semester.
The objective of this project is for you to produce a
research article that should be as close as possible
to a paper that you could submit for publication. The
organization of the
year is meant to provide you with guidance and support
through this process.
Of great importance is the calendar:
we take deadlines very seriously for this course. It
would be a very good idea to spend some time before
the beginning of the semester thinking about a topic,
a dataset, and an advisor.
To get a sense of what constitutes a good research
paper, take a look at the criteria we plan to use for
grading, or the guidelines
we provide for peer review.
Also of interest are the
guidelines provided for writing a paper in the
Thesis Workshop. Finally, you may find it interesting to review past winners of the Sidney Hoos Prize.
