October 7:
Problem set 3 is posted. This is due October 14th at the beginning of class.
October 2:
** Professor Sadoulet's office hours are cancelled this week. **
Please read carefully the requirements for daily assignments that are due on October 7th.
Please take a moment to give some feedback on the usefulness of section meetings so far by taking an anonymous online survey. It's just six questions and will only take a few minutes. Thanks!
September 30:
If you did not get a handout of the statistical table for the Standard Normal Distribution, you have it in your textbook: Appendix G. Please bring these to class for the next few meetings.
September 25:
We were unable to change the 9am section to an afternoon time. Sections will remain on Wednesdays at 9am and 10am. Anyone that can come to the 9am rather than the 10am is requested to do so. Those not enrolled in the 10am are requested to not attend it (barring exceptional circumstances as "okayed" by Kelly).
Students scoring below 75% on the first problem set should come to Professor Sadoulet's or Kelly's office hours for extra help.
September 23:
Problem set #2 is posted today. It is due September 30th at the beginning of lecture. Once the stack is gone from the table, it is late and you must hand it to Kelly directly.
The wage data used in class is now posted on this site with the class handouts.
Please read the email to be sent out today for further announcements.
September 18:
Kelly's office hours today can not be in the usual 234 Giannini due to a departmental meeting. Office hours will be in the Giannini library (248); come in the library and turn to the right.
All unclaimed practice problems can be picked-up from the bulletin board outside Kelly's office (228B Giannini).
September 11:
For those having trouble with their log file in Stata: remember that a log file must be closed before another one can be opened. Make sure that you dofile ends with "log close". If you are getting a "log file already open" error, type "log close" in the Command Window.
September 9:
** Section tomorrow will be held in 1535 Tolman. ** There are only 20 computers for our use, so please bring your laptops if you have Stata already loaded. Some of you will still probably have to share lab computers with another student.
For those that won't have access to Stata in time for the problem set, note that the microcomputing facility we will use tomorrow has drop-in hours. See their online schedule.
Problem Set #1 is posted and is due September 16th at the beginning of lecture. If you arrive to lecture late (i.e. the stack is gone from the table), you should give your assignment to Kelly before being seated. This applies to practice problems too; those turned in at the end of lecture are late (see your syllabus for how that affects your grade).
You are welcome to consult your classmates and work together on the problem set. However, each student must turn in his or her own original work. Students turning in assignments that are exact replicas of each other will receive a zero for the assignment, no exceptions. For helpful tips on preparing a successful assignment, see the document posted under the "Problem Sets" link.
September 3:
Enrollment Update -- Following sections this morning, a few students were moved from the waitlist to enrollment. 2 students were moved under the EEP course code and 4 under the IAS course code. These students should be notified shortly (or already have been). There are still over 15 waiting on each list. Note that the next students "in line" are those that are seniors in a relevant major (EEP, IAS, Development Studies, etc.). There are still several of these, so if you: are in a different major, have an undeclared major, are a graduate student, a third year or lower, or an exchange student, it is looking unlikely that enough people will drop that there will be space for you. Note that if you did not attend a section this morning, you have been dropped from enrollment or waitlist status.
September 2:
Please ensure that any emails sent to Kelly reach her inbox: always include "EEP 118" in the subject line. Thanks!
August 28:
** Note that attendance at your assigned section on September 3rd is mandatory to remain enrolled in the class **
Helpful information on purchasing the required textbook for this class is posted here.
August 26:
Please begin the process of ordering Stata if you have not already. Last year there were significant delays in delivery due to the busy time of year. If you have any questions or issues with this, feel free to email Professor Sadoulet or Kelly.
August 25:
1) There will not be section on Wednesday, August 27th. Please note that there is a waitlist for this class. Therefore, attendance at the first meeting of section (Wednesday, September 3rd) is mandatory. You must attend the section in which you are enrolled or you will be removed from the class roster.
2) Before you purchase Small Stata, consider that it expires in one year. If you think you may continue working with econometrics beyond one year, you might want to purchase Stata/IC for $155 which comes with a perpetual license (as well as the ability to handle larger data sets). Again, once purchased, this may be installed on multiple computers. If purchasing the software presents a financial difficulty for you, feel free to discuss it with Professor Sadoulet or Kelly and we will try to work something out.
3) There are now 4 copies of the text on reserve at Moffitt Library.
July 10:
Text
We will use Introductory Econometrics: A Modern Approach, by Jeffrey M. Wooldridge. The most recent edition is the 4th, but earlier editions are acceptable substitutes. There will be 4 copies on reserve at Moffitt Library. Reserve call numbers will be posted here when they are available.
Software
Problem sets will require you to use a data analysis and statistical software program called Stata. We will begin using Stata in a tutorial during the second week of class. If you want to purchase your own copy of the software for your laptop or home computer, a single-user one-year license for Small Stata (sufficient for this course) is available through Berkeley’s GradPlan for $48. Note that a license allows you to install the software on up to three of your own computers. See http://www.stata.com/order/schoollist.html to purchase (select CA, then UCB, then product code SMSOFTAGS). Software is delivered to campus for pick-up within a few days of online purchase.
