The US Department of Energy offers many fellowships including the Global Change Education Program for research in global climate change. Application deadline last year was Feb 1.
Environmental Protection Agency:
The EPA offers the STAR fellowship (Science to Achieve Results) in environmental studies, which could include environmental-related development research. Application deadline is November 19.
Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship:
The FLAS provides academic year and summer fellowships to assist graduate students in foreign languages or area studies. Application deadline is in the Fall.
The US Fulbright program has grants to cover travel and study in most developing countries. The application deadline for the US Fulbright is October 25. Craig McIntosh (mcintosh@are.berkeley.edu) received this for the 2000-2001 academic year (for research on microcredit in Uganda). Contact him for more information. The Foreign Fulbright graduate student program pays for graduate studies in the U.S.
PromPeru, Peru's Tourism and Investment Promotion Board, is pleased to announce its sixth annual Summer Research Fellowship. The Fellowship offers a select group of qualified graduate and professional students the opportunity to spend ten weeks in Lima during the summer, conducting primary research on issues of public policy, economics, and international relations of importance to Peru. Fellows have access to policymakers, high-level government officials, and leaders in the private sector and the NGO community in Peru. Applications will be reviewed, selected, and nominated by Professor Katrina Burgess, PhD, Assistant Professor, Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University, advisor to the Program.
Lincoln Institute of Land Policy:
The LILP offers funding for educational and research projects that address the following Institute program areas: taxation of land and buildings, land markets, land as common property, and Latin America and the Caribbean. Application deadline is March 1.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration:
NASA offers the Earth Science Fellowship for research on global climate change. These awards can be for up to three years of coverage and your topic can be broadly related to climate change and its effects. The deadline for this last year was March 15. Chris Busch (busch@are.berkeley.edu) is recieving this fellowhip for the 2001-2002 school year (for research on deforestation in Mexico). Contact him for more information. You can also find information on their Graduate Student Researchers Program. The deadline is February 1.
National Security Education Program:
The NSEP Graduate International Fellowships enables U.S. graduate students to pursue specialization in area and language study or to add an important international dimension to their education. NSEP Fellowships support students pursuing the study of languages, cultures, and world regions which are critical to U.S. national security, but which are less frequently studied by U.S. graduate students, i.e., areas of the world other than Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Application deadline is February 1.
The NSF offers the Economics Program which supports economic research. Topics of current interest are computational economics, the transformation of command economies, human resource-related issues (poverty, labor productivity, the family, gender and racial discrimination, etc.), and global environmental change. The application deadline is January 15. They also offer a fellowship in Decision, Risk, and Management Sciences. The deadline for this one is also January 15. Training Program
The fellowships are awarded, with the exception of the medical sciences
and introductory language studies, for advanced study at
the graduate level and graduate research. Fellowships are granted initially for
periods of up to twelve months. Studies may be undertaken in
any of the member States of the Organization of American States, with the
exception of the country of which the candidate is a citizen or permanent
resident. For citizens of the United States, applications must be presented to
the Division of Cooperation for Development of Human Resources (DCDHR) at the
Inter-American Agency for Cooperation and Development (IACD) in Washington,
DC., by no later than January 15th of each year.
Horizontal
Cooperation Program for Fellowships and Training
The Horizontal Cooperation Program for Fellowships and Training
(CHBA) fellowships are for specialized courses given in educational centers in
the OAS member States with the collaboration of the General Secretariat,
within the framework of horizontal cooperation. The Division of Cooperation
for Development of Human Resources of the IACD prepares a list of all courses
for which fellowships are
available. Detailed individual announcements with all pertinent information
about courses is published.

Research Division Fellowship Program and Other Fellowships
Population Fellowships are designed to provide support for significant
population studies in combination with a social science discipline, such as
economics, anthropology, geography, and public health. Awards will be made
only to applicants whose proposals deal with the developing world. Strong
preference is given to applicants from developing countries who have a firm
commitment to return to their home country upon completion of their training
programs. Applications are accepted from graduate students at the doctoral
fieldwork or dissertation-writing level, and postdoctoral and mid-career
persons. Doctoral awards are non-renewable and typically twelve months. Awards
consist of a monthly stipend (based on type of fellowship and place of study),
partial tuition payments and related fees, transportation expenses (for fellow
only), allowances for books and supplies, and health insurance. Application
deadline is December 15.
There are also other fellowships available.
Resources For the Future offers fellowships for research on the environment, energy, and natural resources. Last year's deadline was February 28.
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation offers funding for post-doctoral work on research related to health economics.
The Social Science Research Council offers a pre-dissertation fellowship in Applied Economics, as well as a week long Summer Workshop in Applied Economics. The Summer Workshop in Applied Economics is primarily for students after their first year. Students who have gone to the Summer Workshop are favored in the Fellowship competition. They also have an International Dissertation Field Research Fellowship as well as many other fellowships. Check out their web site!!! The deadline for the applied economics fellowship is November 5. Caridad Araujo (araujo@are.berkeley.edu) is receiving the applied economics fellowship to study neighborhood effects and labor supply in Mexico. Laura Schechter (schechte@are.berkeley.edu) is receiving the applied economics fellowhsip to study theft and trust between villagers in Paraguay.

UC MEXUS provides different fellowships for research on Mexico and Meican Americans.
Robert
S. McNamara Fellowships Program
The program awards approximately ten fellowships to support innovative
and imaginative post-graduate research in areas of socio-economic
development. It is intended to cover research costs only. The amount of the
award is $7,500. Last year's deadline was August 15.
Joint
Japan/World Bank Graduate
Scholarship Program
The program awards scholarships to individuals from World
Bank member countries undertake graduate studies at universities renowned for
their development research and teaching. The scholarship provides benefits for
the recipient only, covering: Tuition and required medical insurance for the
scholar only, payable directly to the university; Subsistence allowance
covering living expenses and books; Economy class travel in both directions
between
the home country and the host university, in addition to an allowance to cover
expenses incurred while traveling; and Language training in the language of
the host country, if considered necessary. Application deadline is in
January.
IGERT provides two-year fellowships to Ph.D. students beginning in either their second or third years who have not advanced to candidacy. All students meeting these criteria from the departments of economics, political science, Psychology, Business, and the Goldman School of Public Policy may apply.
