The following sample job descriptions, from the Farm Employers Labor Service, may serve as points of departure in writing descriptions for positions in a given farm business.
 
Title: General Manager/Nursery Retail

Summary:

Responsible for the supervision of personnel, production, sales (retail), purchasing and customer relations. Directly supervises all departments and retail store employees. This position reports directly to the Board of Directors.

Qualifications:

-Requires a minimum of five years experience in the management of personnel in the retail trade, and a minimum of three years experience in wholesale nursery production. A Bachelors Degree in Business or equivalent. 
-Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Working Conditions:

Title: Nursery Production Manager

Summary:

Responsible for the planning, scheduling of crop rotation, crop purchasing for propagation and efficient utilization of growing areas. Production Manager supervises production employees, develops new product lines to be sold in retail store and coordinate s the sale of wholesale products. 

Qualifications:

-Requires a minimum of three years of experience in nursery stock propagation and the wholesale nursery trade.

Summary:

Operates tractor to plow, cultivate and fertilize field.

Qualifications:

-Calibrate agricultural implements such as spray nozzles, operate backhoes and wheel & crawler tractors 
-Knowledge of pesticide application safety procedures 
-Knowledge of operating procedures of tractors and other farming equipment as assigned. Knowledge of routine tractor maintenance procedures. 

Essential Functions:

-Prepare soil in fields by discing, grading, shifting dirt.

Summary:

Summary:

Summary:

Essential Functions:

-Sows seed and plant cuttings for reproduction 
-Examines physical aspect of plants (leaves, flowers, color) to determine if the growing environment is suited to plant. Makes necessary adjustments to temperature, humidity level and light exposure. 
-Determines fertilizer needs and fertilizing schedule for optimum growing condition. 
-Applies pesticides or herbicides as necessary. 
-Grafts, pollinates, transplants and pinches plants and flowers to produce high quality, marketable plants. 
-Mixes soils and maintains specified acidity level of soil for specific plant requirements.

Summary:

Assists in poultry farm activities 

Essential Functions:

-Clean floors and spread clean sawdust over floor.

-Stack and move crated eggs and poultry. 
-Drive truck to deliver eggs/chickens as directed.

Responsible for assisting in the propagation and growth of plants inside a greenhouse.

Summary:

Picks strawberries from plants, crating them for transport and loading crates onto truck.

Summary:

-May destroy diseased plants or trees by burning them.

Title: Shipping Supervisor

Summary:

Oversees the operation of selection, packaging and labelling and transport of plants to other locations. 

Qualifications:

-Valid driver's license and clean DMV record

-Bilingual in Spanish and English. 

Essential Functions:

-Supervise the selection, preparation and shipment of plants to stores. 
-Supervises the maintenance of delivery equipment.

Title: Tomato Harvester Operator

Summary:

Operates the tomato harvester with field employees to harvest tomato crop.

Title: Shaker Operator

Summary:

Operates shaker machine to remove ripe fruit from trees in orchard. 

Qualifications:

-At least one season's experience as a shaker operator 
-Mechanical skills sufficient to overhaul and repair tree shaker and its components 
-Skills in arc and gas welding, gasoline motor repair and hydraulic systems repair. 

Essential Functions:

-Drive shaker to and among trees. Operates shaker properly to minimize damage to trees and fruit loss on ground. 
-Performs daily inspections and preventative maintenance of shaker. Examines machine for evidence of needed repair. Fills shaker fuel tanks and hydraulic fluid tanks. Compiles list of parts and repairs needed and gives list to supervisor. 
-Monitors shaker during operation to anticipate needed adjustments or repairs 
-In event of breakdown, immediately identifies problem and begins to repair machine with tools and welding equipment supplied in orchard.
