The third annual Agricultural Health and Safety Conference,
sponsored by "AgSafe," is March 5-6, 1997, at
the Holiday Inn Capitol Plaza, Sacramento. AgSafe is a nonprofit
coalition of individuals, groups, and organizations (including
UC Cooperative Extension) with the shared mission of the prevention
of injuries, illnesses, and fatalities among those working in
agriculture.
"This conference is the major safety education and training
event of the year for agricultural safety managers and loss control
consultants," says Ron Shanoian, safety manager for J.G.
Boswell Company, and Chair of the AgSafe Board of Directors.
"It is designed to offer practical and proven answers to
those agricultural safety issues we face on a regular basis."
AGENDA . . . Registration starts 8:30 am, March 5th. At
10 am, Don Bennett, AgSafe Director, commences the conference
and introduces Richard Lack, Safety Manager, San Francisco
Airport, to reveal "A Proven Approach to Accident Prevention."
After lunch, you can take 3 of 5 classes. Richard Cavaletto,
Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, discusses his departmentís train-the-trainer
tractor safety certificate program. Bob Chavez, Cal/EPA
Department of Pesticide Regulation, reports on implementation,
enforcement, and content of the Worker Protection Standard. Mario
Faletto, Cal/OSHA Consultant, unveils an employersí
ergonomics guide to identify and lessen repetitive motion injuries.
Robert Krauter, California Farm Bureau Public Information
Specialist, shows how you can plan and train on dealing with the
media during a safety crisis. Karl Wager, Brady U.S.A.,
examines Cal/OSHAís "lockout-tagout" standard,
demonstrates implementation, and surveys lockout-tagout products.
Concurrently, Jim Meyers, UC Specialist, gives a half-day
class for those newly assigned a companyís safety/loss
control responsibilities, or those wishing to review basic equipment
safety and the unique safety characteristics of California agriculture.
At 5:30 pm, a networking reception starts.
After breakfast March 6th, Jess Gomez, Ag Producerís
Safety Training Director, imparts practical pointers on "Developing
and Strengthening the Point of Control ó the Front-Line
Supervisor." Gregory Billikopf, UC Farm Advisor,
presents "Following the Companyís Safety Rules ó
Dealing with the Difficult Employee." Barbara Davis,
Zacky Farms, reviews steps in investigating safety incidents.
And Ben Laverty, California Safety Training Corp., tours
new and old safety and environmental rules for ag businesses.
Jim Costa, State Senator, speaks of legislative issues
over lunch. Then, Ron Shanoian, J.G. Boswell, Corcoran,
Phyllis Sigerist, Consultant, Ventura, and Gilbert Olmos,
Safety Manager, Limoneira Co., Santa Paula, team to review safety
incentive program successes and heed experiences from the audience.
Len Hindergardt, Zenith Ins., instructs on a "Proactive
Approach to Injury Management," with steps to control workersí
compensation fraud and other costs. Doug Neil and Jeffrey
Powers, FMC, describe their process to screen, analyze, and
consider training in "The FMC Approach to Identifying Potential
Ergonomic Risks and Hazards."
