Deaths and injuries from motor vehicle accidents involving farm workers affect the whole farming community. A "Farm Worker Motor Vehicle Safety Festival" providing vital motor vehicle safety information will be held Sunday, June 2, 1996, at Lindsay City Park, Lindsay, CA from 1 to 5 p.m.
Area farm workers, their employers, and others are invited to attend. Events include playing the "Motor Vehicle Safety Bingo Game" and talks by concerned local officials and CHP and community agency representatives. There will also be health screenings, music, prizes, food, and a petting zoo for all the family. For Festival information, call Nora Benavides, UC Program Representative, at (209) 456-7285.
As part of the June 2nd Motor Vehicle Safety Festival, free Worker Protection Standard fieldworker pesticide safety trainings will be conducted in Spanish by Americorps volunteers in cooperation with the UC Agricultural Personnel Management Program. Classes will take place at various times starting at 1 p.m. inside the Lindsay Memorial Hall, 775 N. Elmwood, just across the street from Lindsay City Park. EPA Fieldworker Training Verification "Blue Cards" will be issued. For information about the fieldworker pesticide safety trainings, call Mary Bautista at (209) 627-0100, or Steve Sutter at (209) 456-7560.
Along with growers and other EPA "qualified" fieldworker pesticide safety trainers, an energetic group of bilingual Americorps volunteers in the southern San Joaquin Valley provide free on-site training. They have issued EPA Worker Protection Standard training verification (blue) cards to over 20,000 fieldworkers. Scheduling is flexible. Classes, capped at 40 workers, must have seating and shade. A deputy Ag Commissioner and I have audited their work, and confer high marks. Contact these instructors in:
