Four at meatpacking plant plead not guilty to smuggling workers
by Deborah Alexander

Three managers and a recruiter at Nebraska Beef pleaded not guilty Monday to a revised 22-count indictment alleging a conspiracy to smuggle undocumented workers into the United States.

Mario Villareal-Carrillo, 32, of Council Bluffs, vice president of human resources at Nebraska Beef; Julian Martinez, 61, of Omaha, personnel manager; Tony N. Joy, 39, of Oakland, Iowa, production manager; and Dionicio Labra, 44, of Omaha, a recruiter, entered their pleas during a hearing before U.S. Magistrate Kathleen Jaudzemis in Omaha.

The four, along with recruiters Angelica Quezada, age unknown, and Jose De Jesus Quezada-Neri, 39, both of El Paso, Texas, were named in the revised grand jury indictment.

Authorities were still seeking Quezada and Quezada-Neri, said First Deputy U.S. Attorney Mike Wellman.

The revised indictment alleges that between Oct. 19, 1999, and Sept. 26, the six brought in a series of undocumented workers for jobs at the meatpacking plant in south Omaha and provided them with fake work documents.

The additional felony counts against the six include transporting undocumented workers for financial gain, fraud and misuse of Immigration and Naturalization Service documents and Social Security numbers, and wire fraud.
