Discussion Groups
To tap a large pool of ideas and expertise,
you can put questions, comments, and announcements into a public forum,
or simply lurk and listen. Many e-mail groups (lists) deal with
personnel management topics and issues. Three that are particularly
oriented to people in agriculture are:
- AG-HRnet -- An international e-mail network for discussion on any aspect of managing human resources in agriculture.
- AgLaw --
Carries discussion, mainly among academics, about any aspect of
agricultural law. Maintained by the Washburn University Law School
(Topeka, Kansas) in partnership with the Agricultural Law Center,
University of Arkansas. The link above now goes to a main page that
includes a subscription form, simple use guidelines, and a link to
archived messages.
- WPS-Forum -- Discussion group and reference archive
with specific focus on the Worker Protection Standard for Agricultural
Pesticides and related pesticide safety practices. Carries
announcements, rule clarifications, and practical resource documents.
Very low activity since 1998, but files in the archive remain helpful.
- Ag-Busnet
was a list through which Steve Sutter, retired APMP Farm Advisor,
distributed brief articles, news, and time-sensitive notices on topics
such as payroll tax, safety compliance, services for employers and farm
workers, proposed and enacted legislation. Its monthly archives remain online.
Several other networks carry discussion
useful to practitioners and observers of personnel management, not
necessarily in agriculture. Of special note are:
- CALHR(California
Human Resources) is an electronic communication list server
for those interested in human resource management practice, consulting,
research, or teaching, particularly in California. Discussions
range over the full scope of HRM specialties, including recruiting,
hiring, compensation, benefits, training, employee relations,
performance management, organizational development, and employment
law. Click the list name to reach its YahooGroups homepage with
subscription instructions.
- HRDIV_NET -- Successor to HRNET, which had been a well-established, world-wide forum of the Human Resources Division
of the Academy of Management, this list for members only has a much
more moderate level of traffic. Managed by Mark Huselid at Rutgers
University. For subscription instructions, click the list name.
- MG-ED-DEV -- Network created by the Management Education and Development Division of
the Academy of Management. Much less traffic than HRNET. Focuses on
organization and delivery of management education and management
development. Though many posts deal with formal classroom settings,
discussion often relates to real world personnel management and
organizational effectiveness. Very capably and cordially managed by Charlie Wankel.

- LERA-Listserve
-- Discussion of labor-mgt relations, labor/employment law, collective
bargaining, dispute resolution, human resource management,
international labor relations, unions, etc. Managed by the Labor and Employment Relations Association,
new name of what was long known as the Industrial Relations Research
Association. Click the list name for instructions on subscribing to
this and two related LERA lists.
